JM PAINTING & STUCCO - GREAT WORKS ENDURE OVER TIME!

Stucco Finishes & Textures

Matching an existing texture so a repair disappears, or changing it entirely. Chicago, the North Shore and the western suburbs. Licensed and insured.

Texture is what makes a repair invisible

You can spot a bad stucco repair from the pavement, and it is almost never the colour that gives it away — it is the texture. Getting a match right is a matter of the aggregate, the tool, the timing and the hand that applies it. It is also the difference between a house that looks repaired and one that just looks right.

What we do

How the work runs

1. Read the existing wall

We look at the aggregate size, the pattern and how it was originally worked, because that is what has to be reproduced.

2. Sample and approve

A sample area goes on your own wall, seen in daylight at full scale. Texture never looks the same on a small board as it does on an elevation.

3. Apply consistently

The same hands and the same technique across the elevation, so the finish does not change halfway along the wall.

Texture questions we get asked

Can you match a texture from the 1920s?

Usually very closely. Older hand-applied finishes have more variation than modern ones, which actually helps — a repair sits into that variation rather than standing out against a machine-uniform surface.

Can I change the texture on my whole house?

Yes, through resurfacing. It is the most effective way to update the look of a stucco house without touching the structure.

Will you show me before doing the whole wall?

Always, on anything visible. A sample area goes on your wall and you approve it in daylight. Photographs and sample boards are not a reliable guide for texture.

Does texture affect how the colour looks?

Considerably. A heavier texture casts more shadow and reads noticeably darker than the same colour on a smooth finish. We take that into account when you are choosing.

Close-up photographs of our own finishes and texture matches are being added to this page shortly. In the meantime, see our recent projects.
